The Chimacum Grange has transformed into 19th Century London for the Sunfield Farm and Waldorf School’s Christmas play. Market-people weave their way through the “streets,” beggars ask for pennies in thread-bare clothing and carolers dressed in petticoats sing hymns on the cobblestone roads. But up on stage, old Ebenezer Scrooge is as unhappy as ever. The Sunfield 7th and 8th grade class’ rendition of “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens is an homage to the classic story: Bob Cratchit shivers in front of a tiny candle flame, Scrooge quivers at the sight of his old pal Jacob Marley. The Ghost of Christmas Present, while no bigger than the size of a fifth grade boy, is working his way up to having a fearsome chuckle. The play’s words are taken straight from the novel, and even though Dickens’ writing can be a mouthful, quotes like, “Every idiot who goes about with ‘Merry Christmas’ on his lips should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart,” come out of the mouths of these young actors with ease. But the students are taking it one step further with their teacher and director, Helen Curry, by trying to bring Dickensian London of the 1800s to life. “We’re trying to create an immediate London street scene for the audience,” Curry said. “We’ll have market criers and people selling real pies walking throughout the audience, so that audience members feel like they are in London as soon as they enter.” The students are also using the talents they learn at school, such as playing recorders, singing in harmony, traditional dancing and playing violins to create their own soundtrack for the production. Traditional English Christmas Carols are woven throughout the play. Festivities begin with a small Christmas market at 5:45 p.m. and the performance begins at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 5, 6 and 7. On Dec. 8 the market will open at 2:15 p.m. with a performance at 3 p.m. All performances are at the Chimacum Grange, 9572 Rhody Dr, Chimacum, and are open to the public, with a $10 suggested donation.
