Aldrich’s brought steaks to seamen

Posted

In 1952, I was stationed on a U.S. Coast Guard patrol boat in Port Townsend. We were docked at the same slip the current CG boat is in today. We had a crew of 12 including a crazy but very creative cook. Since more than half the crew lived ashore, our food allotment was bigger than usual, and this is where the Aldrich grocery came in.

Our orders had the best of anything the Aldrich store could provide. The beefsteaks we ate were absolutely fantastic! Because I grew up poor I’d never had a steak like what the Aldrich store brought us. Yes, they delivered right to our dock. I’m salivating right now just thinking about those juicy, tender steaks our cook prepared for us. It was a culinary eye-opener for me. It’s sad to think that they are closing after all the decades they served our community.
