Airplane goes off runway at airport

No one was hurt when a small aircraft went off the runway at the Jefferson County International Airport late Thursday.

The mishap was reported at 9:14 p.m. Thursday, May 20.

Emergency dispatchers received two phone calls about an aircraft, possibly a Cessna, that was at the end of the runway with one wing on the ground.

One witness said the aircraft appeared to be nose down in a ditch. Another witness reported seeing a door open on the aircraft, but no one around.

Deputies from the sheriff’s office responded, said Detective Sergeant Brett Anglin, and contacted the pilot.

The pilot said the aircraft never left the ground and went off the runway while it was taxiing.

The aircraft then became stuck in the grass, Anglin said.
