Accordionist Paul Rogers and the Hi-Jinx Band will perform a variety of original Christmas tunes Dec. 23 to raise money for the Community Outreach Association Shelter Team’s Winter Shelter in Port Townsend. The shelter is operated in cooperation with OlyCAP and the American Legion, in the basement of Marvin G. Shields Memorial Post 26 at 209 Monroe St. in Port Townsend. “COAST and the Legion have done an amazing job converting the Legion basement into a refuge,” Rogers said. “But there are ongoing costs and more improvements that need to be made. This year, the demand is greater than ever. I encourage everyone to pitch in and do what they can to help.” The shelter, for single adults 18 and older, is open daily from 4 p.m. to 8 a.m. from November through March. About 23 beds are available each night. Services include three meals daily and referrals to community resources. U.S. military veterans are prioritized for service. “The people in Port Townsend have an enormous capacity for compassion and willingness to help others,” Rogers said. “The winter shelter provides a safe, warm place for homeless vets and others to get food and relief from the bitter cold nights.” The show will begin at 7 p.m. at the Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 2333 San Juan Ave. in Port Townsend. Tickets are $20 in advance at www.hijinx.brownpapertickets.com or at the door. The show has become an annual tradition in Port Townsend, delighting sellout crowds with a wide variety of upbeat and humorous Yuletide tunes Rogers has written during the past 30 years as a member of the legendary San Francisco Bay Area Christmas Jug Band, a news release stated. The show will feature a lineup of Port Townsend musicians, including Carla Main, Dirk Anderson, Tom Svornich, Kurt Festinger and John Maxwell. “Once again the Hi-Jinx band is going to put on a great show for a great cause, and we are very excited to work with the QUUF and present the show in their beautiful sanctuary,” Rogers said.
