Jefferson County voters will cast crucial ballots in national, state and local elections this November.
Here’s what’s on the 2020 General Election ballot:
Referendum Measure No. 90 – The Legislature passed Engrossed Substitute Senate Bill 5395 concerning comprehensive sexual health education.
The bill requires school districts to adopt or develop — consistent with state standards — comprehensive age-appropriate sexual health education for all students. Parents can have their children opt out of receiving sex health education.
Voting “yes” will keep the law in place and require public schools to provide comprehensive sexual health education, beginning in the 2021-22 school year for grades six through 12, and all grades in the 2022-23 school year.
Advisory votes are non-binding and will not change the law that created the tax that is the subject of the ballot measure.
Advisory Vote No. 32, Engrossed Substitute Senate Bill 5323
The Legislature passed a retail sales tax on passthrough charges that retail establishments collect for carryout bags, costing $32 million in its first 10 years, for government spending.
Advisory Vote No. 33, Substitute Senate Bill 5628
The Legislature adopted a tax on heavy equipment rentals to consumers by heavy equipment rental property dealers, costing $103 million in its first 10 years, for government spending.
Advisory Vote No. 34, Engrossed Substitute Senate Bill 6492
The Legislature adopted the business-and-occupation tax rate for certain businesses, while reducing certain surcharges, costing $843 million in its first
10 years, for government spending.
Advisory Vote No. 35, Engrossed Senate Bill 6690
The Legislature passed the business-and-occupation tax on manufacturers of commercial airplanes, including components or tooling, costing $1 billion in its first 10 years, for government spending.
Engrossed Senate Joint Resolution No. 8212
The Legislature has proposed a constitutional amendment on the investment of public funds.
This amendment would allow public money held in a fund for longterm care services and supports to be invested by governments as authorized by state law, including investments in private stocks.
