The first set of Jefferson County election results, reported Tuesday night Nov. 5, could predict the final outcome...or not. That’s because the Jefferson County election office received 4,000 more ballots from mail and drop boxes on Nov. 6 and have yet to count them all and add them into the tally. Same-day voter registration combined with Washington’s mail-in ballot law—which allows ballots postmarked the day of the election to be counted—means results announced on election night are only initial results. Out of the 9,553 ballots counted Tuesday night, some races were as close as 200 votes. In the race for Brinnon School Board seat #1, just 30 votes separate Mary Fickett and Laura Beck. Four thousand additional ballots could make a dent in the Port Townsend city council race, in which initial results showed Monica MickHager leading incumbent Deborah Stinson by 422 votes. The next tally, which will include all the last-minute ballots, will be unveiled on Secretary of State website on Nov. 8, giving a clearer idea of actual results. Even then, the election will not be certified until Nov. 26, says Quinn Grewell, the county’s election coordinator.
