The Uptown Street Fair will be celebrating 30 years of fun in a day-long event centered on the historic Uptown District of Port Townsend on Saturday, Aug. 20.
After being suspended for the last two years, organizers are ready to return with a full schedule of live entertainment, an arts and crafts fair, The Grandly Local Parade, and much more.
“It’s just a great community get together,” said Mari Mullen, executive director of the Port Townsend Main Street Program.
Festivities start early at 9 a.m. with the opening of the farmers market, the Port Townsend Arts Guild Arts & Crafts Fair, and a student performance by the Port Townsend High School Music Boosters who are raising money for a field trip to Los Angeles.
Every hour after that will have a new performer taking the stage across from the Uptown Pub’s beer garden that it hosts during the event.
“We have a cadre of volunteers who set up tents and chairs,” Mullen said as she described all the work that goes into the event.
Though it took some arm-twisting because she’s a fan of all music, Mullen did say she’s particularly looking forward to The Band LeLe who will play an eclectic mix of covers and originals with a unique indie-folk-pop style at noon.
After they finish, a hoop-dancing demonstration is scheduled with plenty of participation encouraged.
Then comes what is described as “the unbelievably colorful yet brief” parade before The Unexpected Brass Band starts blowing, followed by The Black Chevys with their rock ’n soul and Cascade Country with some two-stepping honky tonk tunes.
Children’s art activities will abound coordinated by PT Artscape on Lawrence Street from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and a Children’s Story Hour will be presented by the Port Townsend Public Library at 10:30 a.m.
Everyone can come together to cap the night off with a free screening of the family-friendly film “Encanto” at the Port Townsend Public Library.
“Encanto” is an animated musical-fantasy-comedy which tells the story of the Madrigals, with songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda of the Broadway smash “Hamilton.”
