Long-term efforts to improve attendance at Mountain View Pool have resulted in a threefold increase in foot traffic during the past five years, according to data released by the city of Port Townsend. It was a combination of several strategies that led to the dramatic growth, said Alex Wisniewski, city parks, recreation and community services director. “During the past four years, we adopted more of a business-like approach to improving the attractiveness and use of MVP,” he said. “We did this through three primary avenues — data collection, customer experience and marketing.” more

Chimacum High School senior guard Jada Trafton scored 18 points and sophomore Mia McNair added 11 to lead the Cowboys past Steilacoom 49-48 on Dec. 29 during the consolation final at the Charles Wright Academy girls basketball holiday tournament in Tacoma. Chimacum (3-4) trailed by two at halftime and entered the fourth in a 33-33 tie. Seniors Grace Yaley and Maddie Dowling each added seven points for the Cowboys. more
The Port Townsend Redhawks were faced with a tall challenge on opening night of the two-day Crush in the Slush basketball tournament Dec. 28 at the Bruce Blevins Gymnasium. Eastside Prep’s Cameron Bayer, a 6-foot-9 senior, put the Class 1A Eagles on his back with eight of his 13 points in the fourth quarter, erasing what had been a 12-point Port Townsend lead and tying the game with 4:27 to play. But the Redhawks hit several key shots down the stretch, none bigger than junior Noa Apker-Montoya’s 3-pointer with 1:07 remaining, and Port Townsend held off Eastside Prep for a 45-40 win. more

Fifteen Port Townsend REDfins Swim Club members crossed two bridges to attend the 2018 Pacific Northwest Fall Divisional Swim Meet at the Curtis Aquatic Center in Tacoma on Dec. 1-2. “Nerves were high, as some of the athletes competing would be doing so for the very first time,” REDfins assistant coach Ashley Avery said. “But the REDfins handled themselves with the utmost pride and sportsmanship.” more

Port Townsend High School coach Tom Webster had one timeout left Dec. 5 when Crosspoint freshman Thunderr Doty drilled a go-ahead 3-pointer with 38 seconds remaining in the nonleague boys basketball game at Bruce Blevins Gymnasium. The Redhawks trailed by two in what had been a tight game throughout, and Webster said he was ready to stop the action to draw up a play when his team crossed midcourt. more
A year ago, the Port Townsend High School girls basketball team had senior leadership and a junior-varsity team. This season, the Redhawks weren’t sure who would step up to replace them. They got their answer last week. more
