Time flies! I originally got that 1886 bound file of The Call from Bill Benedetto in exchange for an old camera. This was when Bill, former meat cutter at Aldrich’s, was operating a second-hand store in the Hilltop area (speaking of earlier businesses). I had a choice of the Call file (supposedly lost with other records of that paper in a fire) or files of the lesser-known and shorter-lived Irondale News.

That transaction was some time prior to 2000 as I did a synopsis of the Call file for my first book of local history that year. Late historian Jim Hermanson acquired the Irondale files to which I did not have timely access. I can only assume they wound up with the Jefferson County Historical Society.

This file of the 1886 Call was my only source of the suicide of pioneer D.C.H. Rothschild.
