Library offers Clemente courses

The Port Townsend Public Library hosts the Jefferson Clemente Course this fall. The program offers free accredited college courses in the humanities to people living on low incomes. High school diplomas or GEDs are not required to attend. Eligible students simply need to have the desire to learn and explore interesting ideas through literature, philosophy, art and history, and the capacity to make a commitment to attending the course and doing the homework. There are no grades, no tests and no lectures.

Book and material costs, tuition, child care and transportation are provided at no cost to qualified students.

FALL 2014

• "The Journey": Explore how people face life challenges to lead full, engaged and happy lives through literature, philosophy, art and history. College credit is available to those who successfully complete the course. There is no cost to qualified students.

The class is 6-8:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 23-Dec. 11 at the Port ownsend Library Learning Center (Pink House). A light meal is provided before class.

The "Learn How Managing Your Money Wisely Can Help You Take Control of Your Life" financial management course - a new course offering this year - is presented in partnership with Dove House Advocacy Services, Kitsap Bank and the Fund for Women and Girls.

Learn how managing money wisely can help you take control of your life. Explore family and societal values about money and wealth through stories, plays and poems, history and philosophy, to better understand your relationship to them. The financial literacy component helps participants develop the knowledge and skills to achieve economic empowerment so that they may lead safer, financially secure lives. The humanities component of the course addresses issues of ethics, wealth, reciprocity, family esilience and community engagement.

This course gives participants the gift of learning practical tools for managing and protecting their money. Topics to be covered include: effective and simple budgeting, establishing good banking practices, identity-theft protection, managing credit and debt and understanding your credit score, and safe online and social media habits.

The class meets noon-2 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, Oct. 6-Dec. 10 at the Port Townsend Public Library Learning Center (Pink House). Like all Clemente courses, this class is free, and there are stipends available for transportation and child care. No college credit is offered for this class.
