Update: April 16 at 11:45 a.m.
Firefighters responded to a fully engulfed house fire around 3 a.m. on April 15.
The home, located at West Sims Way and Mill Road, was destroyed. No one was injured, as it was unoccupied at the time.
Assistant Fire Chief Brian Tracer said the owner was in the process of painting and preparing the house for new renters, who were set to take possession of the house today.
It took about one hour for firefighters to put out the fire, which had started to spread to the nearby forest. The salvage and overhaul process began around 4 a.m.
It is estimated over 2,000 gallons of water from a nearby hydrant was used to extinguish the fire.
Firefighters and nearby residents were lucky the area was damp Tracer said, as this mitigated the possibilty of the fire spreading to the forest and raging out of control.
"As we move into the dry season, this fire highlights the importance of clearing brush, mowing lawns, and removing lower limbs on trees to make your property fire safe," Tracer said in a press release.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Tracer said it is not likely a criminal cause, but rather an electrical fire in the roof or an appliance failure.
EJFR crews were assisted by Indian Island Engine 91 and Navy Region Northwest.
