Smith supports phased development | Letter to the editor

I researched the Issues page of Lorna Smith’s website for her position on the Pleasant Harbor Resort in Brinnon. Her thoughtful statement makes it clear that the economy and the environment in South County really matter to her. Smith supports the new phased building approach to the resort, in which community amenities such as a clubhouse and recreation center are scheduled into Phase I of the project.

Smith’s position states, “Phase I of the proposed resort is a properly-scaled, low-impact development that adheres more closely to the original vision in the Brinnon Sub-Area Plan. The phasing approach will greatly benefit the residents of Brinnon and the county at large, ensuring that the community’s interests are protected and that they are not left liable for unforeseen financial challenges that could leave the project incomplete, unoccupied or in need of clean-up... Brinnon citizens have worked hard, along with the Board of County Commissioners, the Tribal Nations, the Planning Commission, and the developers to plan a resort that balances the needs of the community, the economy and the environment.”

Lorna Smith favors the new phasing approach as a better fit for the community. The forthcoming permitting process gives the community additional opportunities for input on the project, helping ensure that tribal concerns related to shoreline shellfish beds and water resources are honored.

I appreciate Lorna’s hard work for economic opportunities and environmental protections in our South County towns. Please join me in voting for Lorna Smith for Jefferson County Commissioner!
