Chimacum High School senior Orion Weller was named most valuable player, and head coach Jim Eldridge was tabbed as coach of the year in the Olympic League 1A Division all-league boys’ basketball awards. Port Townsend was voted to receive the team sportsmanship award.
Individually, three Chimacum boys, two Chimacum girls, two Port Townsend boys and one Port Townsend girl made the list of top players in their respective divisions. Two of the PT players are the only ninth-graders on either all-league list.
This is the first basketball season for the four-team 1A division of PT, Chimacum, Coupeville and Klahowya. Coaches vote for any player other than one of their own.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
The all-league rankings in order of votes received (including several ties) for the boys are: Ricky Holguin, Klahowya senior; Wiley Hesselgrave, Coupeville junior, tied with Chris Adkins, PT senior; Detrius Kelsall, PT freshman; John Carthum, Chimacum senior, and Brendon Naylor, Chimacum senior, tied with Ryan Gotchall, Klahowya senior.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
MVP of the 1A girls’ division is Makana Stone, Coupeville junior, and her coach, David King, is coach of the year as the Lady Wolves went undefeated in league play. Coupeville also was voted the team sportsmanship award.
The all-league player list is topped by Izzy Stevens, Klahowya senior; Julie Myers, Coupeville senior; Kiersten Snyder, Chimacum senior, tied with Kaitlyn Meek, PT frosh; Madeline Strasburg, Coupeville senior; and Mechelle Nisbet, Chimacum sophomore.
