Investigation launched after body found in Fort Worden

Officials asking for help with information

An investigation was launched after a body was found Jan. 13 at Fort Worden State Park, and officials are asking for help with identification. Emergency responders were dispatched at about 5 p.m. to the park after a witness reported finding a person hanging from a tree. Port Townsend Police Department public information officer Keppie Keplinger hesitated to classify the case because it was “too early to determine” the cause of death. “It’s so early in the investigation,” Keplinger said. “It’s just too early to tell.” Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney and Coroner James Kennedy said investigators believe the body was in the area for a couple of months, if not more. As of Jan. 14, the body had not been identified. “If anyone knows of anyone missing, or has any information, come forward with a description,” Kennedy said. Coroner investigations tend to take longer than crime investigations, Kennedy said, noting he does not know how long it will take to determine the cause of death. Keplinger echoed those thoughts, saying officials are working the case. “We are on it hot and heavy,” Keplinger said.
