The Chimacum High School cheerleaders won an impressive amount of awards at a National Cheerleader's Association (NCA) camp conducted Aug. 1-4 at Western Washington University in Bellingham.
Representing Chimacum High were Deidra Morris, Hollie Maples, Lauren Montgomery, Jaycie Eldridge, Bailey Castillo, Tessa Rasmussen, Vanessa Stone, Hannah Whitbeck, Alex Solomon, Alyssa Sturm, Alisha Bruner, Gabriella Correa, Jessica Dygert, Molly Meissner, Nina Haddenham and Jordyn Johnson. The squad's head coach is Lauralee Kiesel, assisted by Jessica Wesley.
Maples, Morris and Rasmussen were chosen as All American NCA – the camp's top individual honors – with Meissner and Sturm as nominees. Maples had the highest score of all NCA All Americans.
Chimacum earned first place team trophies for Styleshock Dance, Custom Cheer and for NCA Best All-Around team. The "Herkie" team award, named after the NCA founder, was given to first-year varsity cheer team members Solomon, Dygert, Haddenham and Meissner.
Morris received an individual leadership award and an America Needs Cheerleaders Pin for showing the most leadership of all squad captains.
The unit of Castillo, Whitbeck, Maples, Montgomery and Rasmussen were voted Best Top Gun Stunt Group. Finalists in other categories were Maples in jump, Rasmussen in tumbling and Bruner, Sturm, Correa, Eldridge and Stone as stunt group.
The squad earned seven Spirit Sticks during camp, one of the top team awards, along with other ribbons.
