LETTER: Time to restrict burning

Posted

Burning stumps and slash is a bad practice. Last week, I drove past the logged site at Four Corners and Route 20. A huge pile of logging slash was burning, filling nearby acres with smoke.  Driving by eight days later, we saw the same pile of slash still on fire. The air in our car smelled strongly of smoke. The haze was present for some distance from the site. My wife is sensitive to smoke and immediately suffered a headache.

It may be legal to burn logging debris, but the practice pollutes badly and worsens the air quality for neighbors and those driving by. Burning is much cheaper than hauling the slash for proper disposal, but damaging. I do encourage our regional legislators to restrict this careless pollution and damage to our environment.  We eliminated burning dumps decades ago. It is time to restrict all burning.
