LETTER: Property tax hikes won’t help businesses

My business and the 24 other businesses that lease from me are about to be destroyed or, at minimum, lifestyles severely diminished directly by Jefferson County.

I recently received a new tax assessment containing a 50 percent increase. My taxes for 2017 were $15,600. With the new assessment, it goes to $22,610, and with potential increases, I estimate it could go as high as $27,500.

This is ruinous and it will hurt the local businesses that do business in our complex.

Port Townsend School District bond, approved in 2016 for 20 years at $1.178 per $1,000 property value.

Washington state education budget increase for 2018 at 91 cents per $1,000 property value.

And now the proposed Home Opportunity Fund for seven years, which would be 36 cents per $1,000 value. Add it up.

Overall, it’s $2.448 cents per $1,000 property value.
