Community support will be required to provide housing for families earning below the median income.
I have built 25 houses in 30 years in Port Townsend. I built small, simple houses, in the 800- to 1,100-square-foot range, to keep them affordable. But there are no guarantees the homes will remain affordable forever.
I also served on the board of Habitat for Humanity, where donations and volunteer labor keeps the cost of housing low. Habitat houses are a godsend, but the scale is limited. Again, there is no guarantee of permanent affordability.
Proposition 1 extends support for affordable housing. Property tax is the best tool we have available to us at the local level. There is also the opportunity for funds to be matched, giving us more housing for our buck. And there is a requirement of at least 40-year affordability. Please vote yes on Proposition 1.
