Despite losing their season opener, the Redhawk football team had “a great start” with a young lineup.
PT coach Patrick Gaffney said the freshman class led the way Aug. 31 on the starting team with Tanner Woodley at quarterback, plus Nico Winegar, Roman Humphrey, Logan Massie, Blake Stafford, Jerome Reaux Jr. and Murphy Kiemann.
“We had a 14-year-old starting quarterback,” Gaffney said of Woodley, noting some of the players had never played football in their life.
Overall, the Redhawks fell 18-28, but Gaffney was not concerned.
Junior Dylan Tracer had 14 carries for 87 yards during opening night. Other highlights included Winegar with 10 carries for 30 yards, Reaux with eight carries for 43 yards and Woodley with seven carries for 37 yards - including a touchdown.
Woodley was also 4/7 passing for 56 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
Redhawks defense had a number of tackles, including Winegar with 10, senior Chase Campbell with five and sophomore Elias Iardella with four.
“We did pretty good,” Gaffney said of the team.
It is a short week for the Redhawks as they play at home against Kingston at 7 p.m. on Sept. 6.
“We have to do a better job at coaching,” Gaffney said, looking ahead.
