U.S. Coast Guard personnel and multiple good Samaritan boat crews responded to a 22-foot aluminum boat capsized about a mile and a half from shore, near Hand Rock about 10 miles north of La Push on Wednesday, Aug. 17.

One mariner died, and another was picked up and transported safely to shore.

The body of Clifford Dopps, 74, had not been located as of Aug. 19. The boat washed ashore on a remote and rocky section of shoreline near Norwegian Memorial in Olympic National Park. A life jacket and other items were found nearby, but crews have not been able to locate Dopps’ body, the National Park Service reported Aug. 19.

As of Friday morning, more than 20 Olympic National Park rangers were searching a remote section of the park’s wilderness coastline between Shi Shi Beach and Rialto Beach.

The Coast Guard did not disclose Dopps' city of residence, or whether he was wearing a personal flotation device.

Rio, the dog of the deceased mariner, swam from the capsized boat to shore.

A good Samaritan pulled one person from the water and safely transported them to emergency medical personnel waiting at Coast Guard Station Quillayute River with assistance from a station 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew, who escorted the vessel after it had become disabled en route to station, according to a Coast Guard press release.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the friends and family of the deceased,” Senior Chief Petty Officer Cory Wadley, officer in charge at Coast Guard Station Quillayute River, said in a press release. “Many dangers exist when boating in cold waters and people are reminded to pay close attention to the weather and water temperatures, and to take all necessary precautions before going out.”

Weather on scene was clear with light winds, 4-to-6-foot seas, an air temperature of 64 F and a water temperature of 53 F.
