UPDATE 4 p.m. May 6

Equipment failure led to a power surge that prompted the shutdown Wednesday morning, May 6 of the Port Ludlow substation, causing a power outage.

Jefferson County Public Utility District Manager Jim Parker said Wednesday afternoon the system had to be reset.

Power was out at 10:25 a.m. and impacted most of Port Ludlow. Parker was not certain how long the outage lasted.

PUD Electricity Superintendent Kevin Streett said at 1:30 p.m. that power had been restored, although a tweet on the PUD's website at the time indicated power had not yet been restored. Streett said he had asked someone to tweet the power was back up but that hadn't happened.

Prompt communication to the public on power outage information is a question raised of PUD officials, from the public, emergency responders and the media.

Parker noted there are a number of new employees at the PUD, including a few who had only been on the job for a day or two.
