The Jefferson County Transgender Support Group and the Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship are hosting a vigil for Transgender people murdered over the past year on Friday, Nov. 18.
The second annual Jefferson County Transgender Day of Remembrance is at 7 p.m. at the fellowship hall, 2333 San Juan Ave.
The nationwide event begins with a vigil, followed by a showing of the documentary “Just Gender” from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The event ends with a panel discussion hosted by the Jefferson County Transgender Support Group.
The documentary features Port Townsend couple Susan and Cindy Brittain.
“Just Gender” explores the common myths and misunderstandings about transgender people through a series of interviews with transgender persons, their family members and friends, health experts, community leaders and others who work with the transgender community. The film also utilizes some archival footage and stills.
“Just Gender” addresses the confusion between sexual orientation and gender identity, as reflected in the rigid binary view of the world generally held by society, according to a press release.
The documentary also touches on the discrimination, hardships and brutality resulting from those misconceptions and prejudices, including the numerous deaths caused by hate each year.
The event is free; donations are welcome.
