The latest on ladies hitting the links in Ludlow

Kathy Traci, publicity chairwoman of the Port Ludlow Women's Golf Association and Lady Niners, provided The Leader with a roundup of updates on women's golf in her neck of the woods.

WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION

Diane Kobz and Linda Aho are the winners of the recent Port Ludlow Women's Golf Association Captain's Cup Team Match Play Tournament.

Captain's Cup Tournament Chairwoman Cyndy Kelly and Sheila Schoen announced Kobz and Aho's “3 up, with 2 holes to play” victory over the previously undefeated team of Grace Allen and Beth Weaver.

Traci noted this is the first year for the new format of the Port Ludlow Women's Golf Association Captains' Cup, and reported “it seemed to be enjoyed” by all participants.

Traci likewise characterized the August exchange between the women's and men's golf associations as “well-attended,” with the women hosting the men for a lunch at Niblick's Cafe following 18 holes of play.

Awards for the two flights were announced at the luncheon by chairpersons John Cragoe and Diane Kobz.

August's two-day “Battle of Port Ludlow” tournament replaced the Port Ludlow Golf Club's previous “Mr. and Mrs.” tournament in pitting the men against the women.

The Dove House Tournament also was played in August, and featured prizes for men's and women's flights, as well as a mixed couples flight, raffle prizes, a box lunch and appetizers at the Bay Club.

Traci promised that the All-Star Port Ludlow Women's Golf Association competition Sept. 18 would be “the most anticipated event” of the season.

“Members who have the most participation points of the season will form two teams to compete in this three-part, 27-hole event, said Traci, who pledged that chairwoman Grace Allen is planning “a fun party” to cap off the celebration of the new team victors.

Traci recalled the Port Ludlow Golf Club League Couples 18s Golf was well-attended in August, with Chairwoman Sue Carlson and Sharon Russell announcing the winners at the after-golf dinner, held again at Niblick's Cafe.

“Members need to mark their calendars for Sept. 16, the next Couples 18s Golf event,” Traci said.

Traci went on to announce that Play-Day-Away games will continue throughout the season, with chairwomen Meryl Friedman and Lucinda Thompson announcing the course destinations via email.

Traci pointed out the Fall Gal's Getaway plans have been solidified for September on Whidbey Island, so members should contact chairwoman Sharon Russell to sign up.

“Several members have qualified to play in the two-day Sept. 12 and 13 Washington State Women's Public Links Association Golf Tournament at Cedars of Dungeness,” Traci said.

In the meantime, Traci advised members to continue to use Golf Genius to sign up for Tuesday play, with sign-up sheets for Friday casual play on the bulletin board in the Women's Locker Room.

Port Ludlow Women's Golf Association Captain Sue Fechner invites prospective members to play with the group any Tuesday.

To sign up to play with the Port Ludlow Women's Golf Association, or to join the league, please contact the Port Ludlow Golf Course Pro Shop at 360-437-0272.

LADY NINERS

Port Ludlow Lady Niners' Captain, Elaine Girard, has been encouraging members to participate in Casual Monday Golf by reserving tee times and sending out email announcements to the membership. “This would also be a good time for non-members to join the group for 9 holes of play,” said Traci who advised those who are interested to contact the Pro Shop.

The next Captain's Cup Thursday event is scheduled for Sept. 6.

“Members' net scores on Captain's Cup Thursdays are totaled for the season, and the winner of the Captains' Cup is announced at the October Captain's Luncheon,” Traci said.

Traci reported the August Couples Shotgun event was well-attended, and praised what she deemed “the hearty and delicious dinner” at Niblick's following play.

The next 3 p.m. Couples Shotgun event is scheduled for Sept. 27, with dinner again to follow at Niblick's.

“Members should sign up two times on Golf Genius, once to play in this couples event, and the second time to attend the dinner,” Traci said. “Participants need to arrive at the clubhouse prior to 2:30 p.m. to pay for prizes and their dinners.”

During the beginning of the season, the Men Niners' tee times preceded the Lady Niners' tee times, and now the Lady Niners are preceding the men, which Traci explained allows both groups to finish early for half the season.

Girard welcomes new prospective members to play with the Lady Niners any Thursday Morning.

Individuals should contact the Pro Shop Desk at the Port Ludlow Golf Course for additional membership information.
