Taste tomatoes at farmers market

Posted

Port Townsend Farmers Market hosts a tomato taste-off from 9 a.m. to 2 pm. on Saturday, Sept. 17. Chef Arran Stark is to be on hand, slicing and dicing more than 10 varieties of locally grown tomatoes. Market-goers also have the opportunity to vote on tomatoes based on categories that include: sweetness, tomatoey-ness, texture and appearance.

Stark and participating market vendors of prepared food also cook special dishes featuring local tomatoes, including tomato basil hand pie with SpringRain beefsteak tomatoes, ratatouille hand pie with oven-roasted Red Dog tomatoes, and a smoky eggplant tart with Red Dog tomatoes and Finnriver Farm cherry tomatoes, all prepared by Crust Bakery; paella with tomatoes from Sunfield Farm and Waldorf School, made by Paella House; and local tomato gazpacho by the Seafood Spot.

Laurie McKenzie of the Organic Seed Alliance is to demonstrate tomato-seed saving and talk about the alliance’s national work developing and testing tomatoes varieties.
