A school relay team record falls to the Port Townsend boys, the Redhawks soccer boys look to host a post-season match, and both golfers and tennis players prepare for district competition. Here is the sports wrap as of May 2:

TRACK & FIELD

PORT TOWNSEND

Port Townsend dropped all the double-dual match ups against 2A North Kitsap and league foe Klahowya April 28, but came away with a new school record in the boys 4 x 100 and recorded a batch of personal bests.

With the boys 4 x 100 foursome missing their usual leadoff sprinter, 800-meter runner River Yearian was recruited to step into the role and shown basic hand-off instructions before the event. The quartet of Yearian, Seren Dances, Carson Marx, and Koby Weidner sped to a 44.20 finish, besting the 44.34 mark set at last year's 1A state championship.

The team as a whole competed exceptionally well, noted coach Ian Fraser, with the 30 Redhawks competitors recording 39 personal bests, along with seasonal bests for both 4 x 100 relays and the girls 4 x 400 relay. Taking individual firsts were Weidner, Marx, Eileen Leoso and Shenoa Snyder.

The Redhawks sent their best performers to the April 30 Shelton Invitational Track & Field meet, where the top 16 entrants in each event were drawn from the 62 1B to 4A schools that participated. Frosh standout Botkin took another big step in her young career and turned in the day’s best performance, finishing 2nd in the 100 hurdles in 15.74 for the No. 2 PT all-time mark, less than a half-second off the school record set in 1998. Other top 10 placers included Dances (7th in LJ, 20-0; boys 4 x 100 (8th, 44.46), and Weidner (9th in 200, 23.02), each besting all other 1A competitors.

CHIMACUM

Chimacum faced 2A schools Bremerton, North Mason and Sequim April 28, and recorded several top-five finishes. Winners were Sam Golden, Trevon Noel (2), Chris Sevilla and Kayla Gates.

BOYS’ SOCCER

PORT TOWNSEND

Port Townsend (3-2 league, 6-6-1 overall) defeated Chimacum 7-1 April 26 and took a 6-2 victory over Coupeville April 28 before falling to league leader Klahowya 5-0 on April 30.

The Redhawks are locked into the Olympic League's No. 2 slot. They will square off with the third seed of the Nisqually League in the first round of the playoffs.

Despite their latest loss, Port Townsend coach Ahmad Baabahar is pleased with the direction his team is headed. “Weʼve really been jelling as a team the past few games.” he said. “This seasonʼs been pretty good.”

PT has a deep and talented junior class (16 players) to make up for its small number of seniors (3). They are expected to be the core of a dominant team next season. Baabahar also spoke highly of the underclassmen, as well as the incoming freshmen of 2017. “We have a young crop of kids coming up who have been playing a long time.” he said. “We’ve been in the rebuilding stage the past few years and now we have a lot of talent coming up.”

Against Chimacum April 26 at Jefferson County Memorial Athletic Field, PT stopped Chimacum 7-1.

Against Coupeville April 28, "Senior Night" for PT, the Redhawks won 6-2, and team's 3 seniors got into the scoring action. PT's scoring started with an own goal, deflected off a shot by senior Bennet Fischer. After Coupeville tied it 1-1, Payton Manning scored with an assist by senior Patrick Charlton, and senior Beshir Little scored to make it 3-1 at intermission. Charlton opened the second-half scoring thanks to Sam Meier's corner kick. After a Coupeville goal, Manning scored, assisted by Fischer, and Fischer scored, assisted by Little.

In the JV team's 6-0 win against Coupeville, goals came from Milo Rolland (2), Owen Scanlon (2), Ben Mattern and Ian Kjeldgaard. Assists were by Mattern (2), Aidan Falge, Kjeldgaard, Scanlon.

The regular season finale May 3 in Chimacum may be meaningless in terms of playoff standing, but is important for the team to gain momentum heading into a playoff battle that Coach Baabahar simply described as “difficult.”

PT hosts the district tourney play-in match against the Nisqually League's No. 3 team (Bellevue Christian), but it must be on artificial turf, not grass. The match is set 1 p.m. Saturday, May 7 at the Peninsula College turf in Port Angeles. The May 7 winner enters the district tourney's double-elimination bracket starting with a 7 p.m. May 10 match at Nisqually League No. 1.

NEXT: Played Chimacum May 3 to end regular season; host loser-out game 1 p.m. May 7 against Nisqually League No. 3 team (Bellevue Christian) with winner advancing to district double-elimination round starting with a 7 p.m. May 10 match at Nisqually League No. 1. Two of the final 4 teams qualify for state, with trophy games May 12 and May 14.

CHIMACUM

Chimacum (0-5 league, 1-11 overall) lost to Port Townsend 7-1 April 26, fell to Klahowya 7-0 April 28 and were topped by Coupeville 11-4 April 30.

NEXT: hosted Port Townsend May 3 to end season.

GIRLS' TENNIS

Chimacum/Port Townsend (3-9 league, 3-9 overall) lost to Coupeville 6-1 on April 26 and 6-1 to Klahowya May 2.

On a hot day to be on a tennis court surface, Klahowya netted the win over a shuffled Cowboy/Redhawk lineup. Breithaupt lost 1st singles 0-6 and forfeited due to illness, Woods won 2nd 6-3, 6-2 in her first try at that slot, and Plastow fell 2-6, 3-6 at 3rd. Emma Craighead and Bell lost 1st doubles 2-6, 0-6, Music and Plunkett took a 2-6, 1-6 loss in 2nd, Rasmussen and Serena Williams fell 4-6, 3-6 in 3rd, and Calkins and Bishop lost 5-7, 2-6 in 4th. The JV team of Solomon and Alima Devas won 6-4, and Rasmussen played a JV singles match and lost 3-6.

The Coupeville match was tightly contested. Coach Laurie Olafson noted it must be a record for 10-point tiebreaks. Chimacum/PT fought back from 1st set losses in 4 of the 5 matches to force the tiebreaks, but won only 1 of 5. Although the final score didn't reflect it, the matches were extremely close and could have gone either way. PT players An Nguyen and Amelia Breithaupt played good, competitive matches before losing in the tiebreak, according to Olafson. The final doubles also saw a well-played and exciting match, with Tessa Rasmussen and Jordyn Johnson edged 10-8 in the tiebreak.

In 1st singles, Sophia Thurston lost 1-6 ,4-6, Nguyen lost 2-6, 6-3 3-10 tiebreak in 2nd and Breithaupt in 3rd fell 6-2, 5-7, 10-12 tiebreak. In 1st doubles Amy Plastow and Renee Woods lost 4-6, 1-6, Christina Bell & Gladys Hitt lost 4-6, 6-1, 3-10 tiebreak in 2nd, Marley Music and Aurora Plunkett had the lone win with a 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 tiebreak victory in 3rd, and Rasmussen and Johnson lost 3-6, 6-2, 8-10 tiebreak in the 4th spot. Playing JV doubles were Lacey Bishop and Delana Horner, and Alex Solomon and Emily Calkins.

NEXT: at Coupeville 4 p.m. May 4 to end regular season; at 1A Olympic League tourney, noon (or a bit earlier, depending on the ferry from Coupeville) on Tuesday May 10 at Chimacum High School. Each of the three teams enters at least two singles players and two doubles teams. The top 4 Olympic finishers advance to the 1A District tourney May 19 at Sprinker Field in Tacoma, against their Nisqually League counterparts.

GOLF

The Chimacum boys’ golf team (5-3 league, 6-3 overall) is prepping for the season-ending 1A/2A Olympic League tourney May 10, and then focusing on the West Central District golf tourney May 10 at Gold Mountain Golf Club, when berths to the state tourney are decided.

CHS defeated North Mason 167-189 on April 22 at Port Ludlow. Scoring for Chimacum in the 9-hole match were Chris Bainbridge 39, James Porter 40, Marcus Bufford 41, Aidan Hartnett 47, Logan Storm 49 and Nate Miller 57.

Chimacum scoring in an 18-hole match April 26 against Port Ludlow were Marcus Bufford 79, Chris Bainbridge 87, James Porter 93, Logan Storm 104, Aidan Hartnett 108 and Nate Miller 120.

Marcus Bufford and Chris Bainbridge have both been invited to play in this year's Bill Egbers Memorial Golf Tournament held at Skagit Golf & Country Club. They were invited for being in the Top 6 for scoring averages of the Olympic League.

The Port Townsend boys’ golf team (7-1 league, 8-1 overall) hope to close the regular season with a 5-match winning streak with a May 4 match against North Kitsap at White Horse.

Port Townsend scoring in an 18-hole match April 26 against Chimacum at Port Ludlow were Sebastian Thomas 84, Austin Khile 88, Jacob Ralls 93, Patrick Morton 94, Jaime Peake 100 and Keegan Khile 102.
