Kaitlyn Meek has been named the 1A Olympic League Most Valuable Player by the coaches whose teams faced her and her fellow Port Townsend Redhawks on the hardwood.
Meek, a senior, was a finalist for the honor in the previous two seasons. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players.
In addition, junior Jaz Apker-Montoya and sophomore Izzy Hammett were named to the All-League first team. That means that three of the top six players put on the all-league team were Redhawks.
For the Chimacum Cowboys, freshman Mia McNair was named to the first team, as were Lindsey Roberts and Sarah Wright of Coupeville.
Meek had an outstanding year. She scored an average of 13.3 points in league games on 52 percent shooting from the field. Although a point guard and just 5-foot-7, she was the team’s and the league’s leading rebounder, crashing inside to gather an average of 9.3 rebounds per game.
Meek’s defense has always been relentless. She was also the leader in steals and deflections, with 6.2 per game on average. She recorded 3.6 assists.
She is being looked at by basketball coaches from several small colleges.
Apker-Montoya was the Redhawks’ leading scorer this season, averaging 14.4 points on 45 percent shooting. She was the team’s leading three-point shooter and the most accurate free throw shooter. She generated 2.4 steals or deflections per game.
Hammett emerged as a powerful post player on both offense and defense. She averaged 8.1 points per game and was a consistent scorer throughout the season. She also gathered 8.3 rebounds per game.
Also nominated for the first team was Redhawk senior Cece Nielsen, a defensive standout.
