PT swimming club holds mock meet

Posted

Dozens of goggle-wearing children eagerly dove into the water and swam as quickly as they could through Mountain View Pool’s 20-yard length of blue water during a mock swim meet Feb. 2.

Adults timed the children as they swam, and friends and family members in the bleachers cheered as the young swimmers raced in events that included freestyle, butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke.

The training event was designed to prepare members of the Red Fins Swim Club for a real swim meet. The club’s first meet is scheduled for March 2 in Lake Stevens. The meets take place all over western Washington.

The mock meets are being held “to give our young competitors a realistic idea of what competition feels like,” said Lena Curtis, aquatics program coordinator for the pool.

“We’re shooting for four team meets this year,” Curtis said. “Individuals may go to more, depending upon qualifying times.”

The club has had one prior mock meet, last month.

Currently, the swim club has 34 children, ages 5-18.

Emily Harrenstein coaches the team. She is certified as a coach through USA Swimming and the American Swimming Coaches Association.

The club was established in 2017, and club members learn about stroke refinement and technique, endurance training, healthy athletic habits, team building and sportsmanship.

USA Swimming is the national governing body for the sport of swimming in the U.S., according to a Red Fins brochure.
