Berkley Hill has been part of high-scoring Port Townsend football teams since he was in fourth grade. Never had the quarterback been responsible for five touchdowns in a single game.
Hill, a senior, rushed for a quartet of touchdowns and passed to Detrius Kelsall for another as PT raced to a 35-0 halftime lead Sept. 8 against visiting Port Angeles. Senior Gerry Coker booted all five conversions. Neither team scored in the second half.
Coach Alex Heilig said he was “extremely proud” of how the Redhawks executed the game plan in the first half. Linemen and receivers made blocks to help spring Hill, who finished with 129 yards on 18 carries.
But in the second half, “I feel like we took our foot off the accelerator.” PT’s defense stayed solid, Heilig noted. “Defense carried us tonight.”
Hill, in his first varsity year as starting quarterback, credited his teammates’ blocking for his grid career’s top game.
“I just had great blocking and I was feeling it and made big reads,” Hill said.
The task gets more difficult in a 7 p.m. non-league game Friday, Sept. 14 at third-ranked Mt. Baker High in Deming. PT lost three fumbles in each of its first two games; such mistakes against Mt. Baker could be costly.
“We’ve got our work cut out for us,” Heilig said. “We know what we have to work on.”
The game against Port Angeles provided a boost of $1,730 in ticket proceeds for the Andy Palmer Memorial Scholarship. Palmer, PTHS Class of 2008, was a student in PA before moving to PT.
