Port Townsend High School graduate Brittany Grant (Class of 2013) competed with the Western Washington University cross country team that placed 12th nationally.

Grant is in her second season with the WWU harriers. She placed sixth of the team's seven runners at the NCAA Division II national championships Dec. 6, 2014 in a rain-swamped course in Louisville, Kentucky. Grant placed 216th (with a time of 24:28.0) in the field of 249 national competitors.

The Viking women placed 12th among 32 teams, finishing third among six West Region teams competing after being sixth in the regional meet, according to a press release. Leading the team at nationals was senior Katelyn Steen, who placed fifth overall (21:20.8).

The WWU men placed 13th in a 32-team field and second among six participating West Region teams after finishing fourth at regionals.

Courses for the women and men were shortened to 5.78-kilometers due to extremely wet and muddy conditions.

Grant was a four-year state cross country competitor while at PTHS. This year at WWU, she was elected by teammates as most improved female athlete on the 19-member squad, and selected to be a team co-captain for next season, her junior year. She was also voted to be most likely to consider Birkenstocks as dress-up shoes. Grant, the daughter of Mark and Nancy Grant of Port Townsend, is majoring in kinesiology and nutrition, with a double-minor in chemistry and environmental studies.
