Chimacum, Quilcene trade blows in double-header

Chimacum High School hosted a nonleague double-header March 30 between the Chimacum Cowboys and the Quilcene Rangers, yielding mixed fortunes for the two baseball teams.

While Quilcene beat Chimacum 6-2 in the first game of the night, Chimacum more than turned it around in the second to overpower Quilcene 13-3.

“The differences between these games were the pitchers and what the offense was able to do,” Quilcene Coach Darrin Dotson said. “In game one, junior Ethan Davis pitched a complete game for the Rangers and was able to get the Cowboys to either fly out or get ground-ball outs.”

According to Dotson, senior Andy Johnston accounted for eight putouts as the shortstop, and senior James Soderberg accounted for six putouts in center field.

“Those two combined gave us 14 outs of a 21-out game,” Dotson said. “Offensively, Andy was three for four at the plate, with three singles and one RBI. Plus, he scored three times.”

The game was already 4-2 in the sixth inning, and Dotson credited Soderberg with solidifying the win by hitting a double, and scoring juniors Robert Comstock and Olin Reynolds in the process.

By contrast, Dotson freely conceded game two was “all Chimacum.”

Chimacum’s pitcher was Dotson’s youngest son, junior Cole Dotson.

“It’s the second time I’ve played against him,” Darrin Dotson said. “A handful of the Chimacum players played for me on my travel team, many years ago.”

With a 13-3 win over the Rangers, Cole Dotson was able to get several fly balls, ground balls and strike-outs.

“In four innings, Cole had eight strike-outs,” the coach said.

Darrin Dotson reported that Quilcene starting pitcher Reynolds was injured from a hard-hit ball, striking him in his pitching hand.

“The Cowboys were able to make short work of the next couple of Quilcene pitchers and ran the bases unopposed,” Darrin Dotson said. “It was still a fun experience for everybody. All these boys have grown up playing with or against each other. Several of the boys on both teams have played for me, either during Chimacum youth football or on one of the two select summer baseball teams I’ve coached.”

The coach admitted watching his son pitch against his team “is always a challenge.

“He seems to find a different gear and pitch his best games, regardless of my constant threats to send him to his room afterwards,” Darrin Dotson joked.
