ShrimpFest in the heart of the Hood

Hood Canal spot shrimp lure foodies and fishermen from all over, and this weekend's annual ShrimpFest is a chance for visitors and locals alike to savor the sweet bounty of Hood Canal.

ShrimpFest takes place this Memorial Day Weekend, May 23-24, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. The festival takes place 3 miles north of Brinnon on the field along U.S. Highway 101 at Yelvik's General Store.

Aside from tasty shellfish, the highlight of ShrimpFest are the traditional Belt Sander Races. Opening heats take place 11 a.m.-noon and final heats at 3-4 p.m. on Sunday. Decorate your favorite belt sander and bring it on Sunday.

ShrimpFest admission is $4 per day or $6 for a two-day pass. That includes live music, craft booths, food booths, exhibits and kids' activities.

The live music lineup includes Eric Miller, Locust Street Taxi, Soul Siren, Greg Parke and the Old Sidekicks.

At low tides, public beaches are great for clamming and oystering – a license is required; visit wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/shellfish for information.

Since 1993, ShrimpFest has celebrated the bounty of Hood Canal. The festival, which of late has drawn about 12,000 people, also raises money for Brinnon School, the Brinnon Volunteer Ambulance and Firefighters Association, Brinnon and Quilcene community centers and other community projects.
