Running in Quilcene: 'Pearl Pops' & perfect weather

Posted

Participants in the second annual Quilcene Oyster Half-Marathon, The Ranger Run (5k) and The Salmon Run (10k) enjoyed perfect autumn weather for the Sept. 7 races in Quilcene. This year's event drew 175 runners, joggers and walkers (ages 17 to 77), compared to 189 last year.

Tom Brotherton, event organizer, credits both Mother Nature and the all-volunteer, Quilcene based people who made the event a success.

“We received a terrific compliment from a participant, saying it was very well-organized and we (the committee) ought to give lessons," Brotherton said. "That felt very good and as we begin to plan for the 2015 event we welcome new ideas, ways to improve and offer a great experience for both the participants and community."

Volunteers and organizing committee members included many people from the Quilcene community. They are: Allan and Mary Kollar, Jan Henry, Beth Hendricks, Bob and Elizabeth Bindschadler, Bob and Pen Rosen, Bonnie Story, Carol and Brian Barker, Carol Christiansen, Cass and Tom Brotherton, Christine and David Satterlee, Clayton White, Cleone Telling, Daniel Cockran, David Haakenson, David and Laurie Neuenschwander, Dora Whittaker, Quilcene Fire Rescue, Juanita and Doug Thomas, Gary Phillips, Gary Stebbins, Graham Simons, Greg Brotherton, Joyce Guin, Jim and Marge Hodgson, Kathy Boyker, Karen and Marty McCullough, Kathleen Kler, Ken Brotherton, Kevin Racine, Larry and Denise Karp, Leslie Bunton, Linda and Stan Herzog, Martha Yaden, Mayla Siemion, Pat Crossley, Sue Stratton, Lee Douglass, Terrie Burnston, and Wayne Siscoe.

Members of the Quilcene Historical Museum’s Linger Longer Stage committee provided support for the Beer Garden. Hamma Hamma Oysters grilled oysters donated by Taylor Shellfish and Coast Seafood of Quilcene. Lariat Ladies from Lilliwaup came with their chuck wagon, offering hot meals for runners, supporters and volunteers. The Quilcene Lions prepared an afternoon spaghetti feed for the general public.

Bob Rosen was the master of ceremonies and Quilcene School Principal Gary Stebbins assisted in the awards ceremonies.

The ‘Pearl Pop’ fund-raiser associated with the event provided a bang-up ending to the day. The pearls (Ping Pong balls) were sold around the community and at the event. Half of the proceeds are donated to community organizations and half to the winning pearls. First place was $240, going to a Quilcene resident, second prize of $120 went to a runner who was celebrating her wedding anniversary, along with her husband who was the event DJ, and the $40 third prize went to a runner.
