Deputies of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a suicide in progress at Larson Lake at about 9:40 a.m. Aug. 5, but the call turned out differently than expected.
The reporting party stated there was a station wagon parked alongside the road with the engine running and a hose running from the exhaust pipe into a vehicle window. The vehicle was filled with exhaust.
Deputies responded, emergency lights and sirens on, to try and get to the scene with the hope of saving the man. The first deputy arrived in less than three minutes and announced his arrival and location.
Approximately one minute later he got on the air and told all responding units to “stand down."
After a short pause, the deputy announced that the owner of the vehicle was trying to kill a rat in his car.
