The Port Townsend cross-country team traveled to the Kitsap County Fairgrounds on Wednesday, Oct. 4 to compete against Klahowya’s 1A and Kingston’s 2A teams. Boys competed at 3:30 p.m. on a three-loop 5K course, and girls competed at 4 p.m.

Port Townsend High School head coach Alice Fraser noted that “a fair number” of her athletes were suffering from various illnesses, but most competed nonetheless.

“Although five PT runners set personal records, the overall results were not as outstanding as they were the previous week,” Fraser said.

The PT boys’ team took second to Klahowya, but beat Kingston, with the three teams scoring 33, 36 and 71, respectively.

PT sophomore Nathan Cantrell’s time of 17:28 took second place to Kingston junior Stefans Lusis’ time of 16:55, while PT junior Gabe Petrick came in fourth overall with 18:06, and PT sophomore Seamus Fraser followed in fifth overall with 18:13.

Fraser added that “a standout race” was run by PT sophomore Ian Linn-Glasgow, who finished in 19:36 for 15th place overall. The PT girls also took second to Klahowya, and beat Kingston, with respective scores of 32, 44 and 49.

Klahowya freshman Rachel Newhard won the race in 21:02, while Port Townsend’s top finisher was senior Ally Bradley, who came in fourth place overall with a time of 22:04.

Bradley was followed by sophomore Anika Avelino (fifth at 22:30) and senior Aliyah Parson (eighth at 23:24).

PT cross-country has one more regular season meet on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at North Mason, before the Olympic League Championships on Thursday, Oct. 19 and the district meet on Saturday, Oct. 28.

“Right now, we’re trying to build some volume and get everyone healthy, and then we’ll focus on some faster race pace work leading into the championship meets,” Fraser said. “We will definitely have some state championship qualifiers this year.”
