PT wrestling performs well against Bellevue

Port Townsend High School’s wrestling teams held their own against visiting Bellevue Christian Jan. 11, with the boys’ team defeating Bellevue 60-18, while the PT girls held them to a 12-all draw.

PT coach Steve Grimm noted that the Redhawk boys are 3-0 in the Nisqually League, and are slated to wrestle for the league title Jan. 25 at Cascade Christian.

Of the PT boys, 160-pound Gabe Petrick won by pin over Josh Erme, while 170-pound Dylan Tracer won by pin over Nick Fountaine.

By contrast, 182-pound Wes Blue won by forfeit, and also won an exhibition against Fountaine. Kyle Caldwell, 195 pounds, won by forfeit, also winning an exhibition against Nathan Antonescue.

At 220 pounds, Ryan Caldwell won by pin over Antonescue.

Other forfeit wins included Tucker Booth at 285 pounds, Ally Bradley at 113 pounds and Carter Swartout at 120 pounds.

At 126 pounds, Ian Linn-Glasgow lost by pin, while 132-pound Jesus Duran won by pin over Trevor Paulson.

At 138 pounds, Elias Iardella lost by pin to Jordan Erme, while 152-pound Odin Smith won by pin over Lukas Ageary.

The PT girls faced only three wrestlers, since that was the total of Bellevue’s roster that evening, so both 135-pound Kalista Hill and 140-pound Veda Dosey won by pin over Hanna Nakamura, while 140-pound Sarah Clark lost by pin to Mary Lu, and 140-pound Az Huin lost by pin to Selena Lee.

“For fun, PT wrestlers also wrestled their teammates to get matches,” Grimm said, reporting that Brenna Franklin beat Jamie Rogers at 170 pounds, and Emerald Bailey beat Berlynn Wells at 145 pounds.

Swartout beat Bradley at 113 pounds, while Cyan Adams beat Emillia Nunn at 120 pounds.

Grimm noted that Jan. 11 was PT’s final home match and “Senior Night,” with Booth, Bradley, Hill, Wells, Caldwell and Duran as the team’s six seniors.

“PT is having a tremendous year due to the leadership of these seniors,” Grimm said. “They are a great group, and will be missed.”

Grimm rated Duran and Petrick as the wrestlers of the night, as they matched up with some of Bellevue’s best wrestlers.

“It was two of our best versus two of their best,” Grimm said. “Not only did we win, we won big, pinning both opponents in the second round.”

Grimm doubted he’d ever coached a team that put up 60 points in a duel.

“I was so proud of our wrestlers,” Grimm said. “They are such a smart and determined team. They wrestled aggressive and fast, like we’ve been known to do, and PT had another great crowd on hand to witness it.”
