Port Townsend cross country runners competed in their first meet with four boys placing in the top 20 out of 135.
The Sept. 6 jamboree at the Kitsap Fairgrounds had a one-mile course, which the runners ran twice.
“Junior Nathan Cantrell took the win in 10:41, senior captain Gabe Petrick took fourth overall in 11:08, junior Seamus Fraser was the third PT runner in 11th place with a time of 11:26, and junior Kincaid Gould finished in 20th place in 11:48,” said coach Alice Fraser. “The team has five freshmen runners this year and Mark Anderson was the top PT freshman finisher in 13:27 for 63rd place, less than a second ahead of fellow freshman Max Allworth-Miles. The boys team took third place with 84 points, behind Port Angeles (1st, 70) and Klahowya (2nd, 80).”
The girls ran shortly after the boys and were led by junior captain Anika Avelino.
“She took 8th place with a time of 14:01,” Faser said. “She was followed closely by junior Rachel Matthes who finished 10th in 14:04 and the third PT runner was sophomore rookie Gina Brown (42nd, 16:40). The girls team did not have enough athletes to score as a team.”
Faser said the meet was a “great opportunity” for the athletes to have a low-key competition before the next match Sept. 15 in South Whidbey.
