Less than half of the Port Townsend High School (PTHS) cross-country team traveled to South Whidbey High School for the 39th annual 5K Carl Westling Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 16, according to head coach Alice Fraser.
Fraser reported that PTHS had three athletes in the JV boys’ race who finished in the top 20, out of 184 runners. Ian Linn-Glasgow placed 11th overall at 20:48, while fellow sophomore Reece Kjeldgaard came in 17th at 20:52, and freshman Skyler Zabransky followed in 18th at 20:55.
“This trio worked together well throughout the race, to the benefit of all three,” Fraser said.
The girls’ team had only two athletes compete, with sophomore Rachel Matthes and freshman Erin Fenton finishing what Fraser deemed a “tough, hot course” in 51st place at 24:22, and 84th place at 31:53, respectively.
The last race of the day for PT was the boys’ Varsity Division 2 race, for 1A, 2A and B schools at 1:05 p.m., with temperatures in the mid-70s. Led by sophomore Nathan Cantrell, who placed 16th overall and had a personal record time of 18:04, the PT boys took ninth place as a team, out of 16.
Junior Gabe Petrick was second runner for the Redhawks, in 29th place at 18:38, and sophomore Seamus Fraser was next for PT in 51st place at 19:30.
Sophomores Kincaid Gould, at 58th with 19:42, and Trillium DeWyse, at 102nd with 21:46, rounded out the varsity squad.
The next competitions for PT cross-country are Sept. 20 and 27 at the Port Townsend Golf Course. JV boys compete at 4 p.m., girls’ varsity at 4:30 p.m., and boys’ varsity at 5 p.m.
