Port Ludlow Fire Commissioner Honored

Long-time Fire Commissioner Gene Carmody was inducted into the Navy Fire and Emergency Services Hall of Fame on June 12 at the Port Ludlow Fire and Rescue Board meeting.

Carmody, a fire commissioner for District 3 for the past 17 years, was honored specifically for his work as the area fire marshal, Western Division Naval Facilities Engineering Command beginning in 1983 and as fire chief at the Navy Consolidated Fire Department in Yokosuka, Japan, until his retirement in 1997. 

He is the 35th person to be honored by the Navy Fire and Emergency Services.

Carmody’s career in the fire service began in 1967 at Naval Station Treasure Island in San Francisco. In 1978, he went on to serve as fire chief at the Naval Hospital Oak Knoll, Oakland, California, until 1980 when he served as assistant chief at the Naval Air Station, Moffett Field, Mountain View, California. In 1983, Carmody became the area fire marshal for Western Division Naval Facilities Engineering Command, San Bruno, California. 

In 1984, Carmody was promoted to the Lead Area Fire Marshal in San Bruno. 

In 1985, he was named the Pacific Area Fire Marshal Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet, Hawaii. In 1987, he moved to Japan where he was the deputy fire chief for the Navy Consolidated Fire Dept. in Yokosuka, Japan. In 1989, he was named the deputy director Navy Fire Protection, Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Alexandria, Virginia. In 1992, Carmody returned to Japan as the fire chief for the Navy Consolidated Fire Department in Yokosuka, Japan. He retired from the Navy in 1997.

Throughout his career, Carmody received recognition for a variety of professional accomplishments to include providing technical assistance in revising the staffing standard to improve staffing of single engine companies and large consolidated fire departments and coordinating and managing Navy-wide fire officer development training courses.

Carmody and his wife, Kozue have lived in Port Ludlow for 23 years.
