About 400 people attended the annual Unity of Effort picnic hosted Aug. 13 by Security Services Northwest at Fort Discovery, near Gardiner in Jefferson County.

The public event featured displays of first-responder units from local, state, tribal and federal law enforcement; K-9 police dog demonstrations; musical performances; and children's activities. The U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Navy and Washington Army National Guard presented displays of vehicles and or equipment.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, U.S. Forest Service, Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, JeffCom 911 and Civil Air Patrol were some of the entities with informational displays.

Attendees could also participate in shooting-range practice – five shots apiece with a .22 caliber rifle.

Event sponsors were Port Townsend Paper Corp., 7 Cedars Casino and Security Services Northwest.

Security Services Northwest is a business founded in 1987 by Joe D’Amico, a Port Townsend native and now a Sequim resident. Fort Discovery is a SSNW training facility along Discovery Bay in Jefferson County, offering firearms courses, private lessons, a recreational shooting range, and a store offering ammunition and firearms, according to the company’s website.
