A 22-year-old Puyallup man died late Wednesday night, July 27, after being struck by a tractor-trailer on U.S. Highway 101 north of Brinnon, according to the Washington State Patrol.

David L. McDonald, 57, of Shelton, was driving a 2016 Freightliner tractor pulling a chip trailer northbound at 11:45 p.m., Wednesday, on Highway 101 at milepost 305, 1 mile north of Brinnon.

The semitrailer struck a pedestrian who was apparently walking in the lane of travel. The pedestrian was identified by the state patrol as Michael P. Moss.

Brinnon Fire Department personnel responded to the accident scene, and found the victim deceased. The accident occurred near the entrance to Seal Rock Campground.

"The guys responded very professionally, secured the scene, helped with the investigation and helped clean up the scene," Tim Manly Sr., Brinnon fire chief, told the Leader.

The victim was wearing a backpack containing personal items and some groceries.

The driver, McDonald, was uninjured, and was wearing a seatbelt. His vehicle was removed from the scene. According to WSP, the driver is not suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The accident remains under investigation.

A state patrol spokesperson did not return Leader calls seeking more information, as of Aug. 2.

The highway was reduced to one-way, alternating travel until about 4:50 a.m. July 28, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Moss is the first person to die from a vehicle-related accident in Jefferson County in 2016; there were eight traffic-related fatalities here on county roads or state highways in 2015.
