A motorcyclist was airlifted for medical treatment after he wrecked Sept. 12, apparently while illegally passing vehicles on U.S. Highway 101 just south of Quilcene.

According to the Washington State Patrol, William S. Luce, 64, of Renton was driving a silver 2016 Yamaha FJ-09 touring motorcycle northbound on Highway 101 approaching Fish Hatchery Road just north of the Quilcene River Bridge.

David A. Burrows, 76, of Port Townsend was driving a white 2003 Subaru Legacy four-door northbound on Highway 101, and preparing to turn left onto Fish Hatchery Road.

About 3:25 p.m. Sept. 12, Williams passed multiple vehicles, which had slowed due to the Subaru's impending turn, and struck the vehicle's left rear, according to the state patrol.

Williams was treated at the scene by Quilcene Fire Rescue personnel, and airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

As of Tuesday morning, Luce was listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit, according to a Harborview spokesperson.

Williams was uninjured, as were three passengers in his Subaru. All were wearing seatbelts.

The motorcycle was totaled, and taken to an impound lot. The Subaru was damaged, and towed from the scene.

The accident’s cause is under investigation; it is unknown whether drugs or alcohol were a factor, according to the state patrol. The highway is striped as a no passing zone along that section near the Quilcene River Bridge.

Both lanes of Highway 101 were blocked for more than an hour before alternating lane traffic was allowed, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
