Locally, Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, is to be celebrated in good form by the American Legion, Sons of the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elks Lodge, Ladies of Elks and the public.

Here is a list of commemorations planned:

PORT TOWNSEND

American Legion Marvin G. Shields Memorial Post No. 26 , Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7498 and Elks Lodge 317 hold wreath-laying services at Fort Worden Military Cemetery (10 a.m.); Laurel Grove Cemetery, Old Discovery Bay Road (10:30 a.m.); and St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, San Juan Avenue (11 a.m.). Selena Espinoza sings the national anthem, and Rick Castellano sounds “Taps.” Members of the local Boy Scout troop place flags at the grave markers of military veterans.

Following the ceremonies, the honor guard and guests join with the public at Legion Post 26, where, at 11:30 a.m., the Port Townsend Summer Band presents a half-hour concert of patriotic music. The 37-piece concert band is led by Legion member Karl Bach. At noon, post Cmdr. Gary Lane opens the ceremonies. Port Townsend Mayor David King is the main speaker, presenting a message titled “Honoring Memorial Day Every Day."

Following the ceremonies, a memorial wreath of flowers is cast upon the water from nearby City Dock by a detail from the post, and the Post Auxiliary offers a buffet potluck luncheon to all those attending the ceremony. The Legion post is located at the corner of Water and Monroe streets in downtown Port Townsend.

BRINNON

Brinnon VFW Post 10706 conducts a Memorial Day service at the Brinnon Cemetery at 11 a.m. Music is performed by Kendra and James.

PORT LUDLOW

The Port Ludlow Memorial Day flag ceremony takes place near the flagpole in front of the Bay Club, 120 Spinnaker Place, at 11 a.m. Veterans recognize and dedicate flags that have been submitted for disposal. Each flag submitted is burned in accordance with the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Following the ceremony, the Port Ludlow Singers present a vocal program that includes patriotic and traditional music.
