A Port Townsend man escaped serious injury Monday, Oct. 30 when his small plane crashed shortly after takeoff at Jefferson County International Airport.
East Jefferson Fire Rescue (EJFR) was called to the accident at 12:47 p.m. after witnesses reported a small plane sputtering, then stalling before crashing into trees behind Lexar Homes on Kala Square Place, south of the airport.
By the time firefighters arrived, the pilot, who was the only occupant of the plane, was out of the aircraft and attempting to shut off the fuel supply, according to EJFR spokesperson Bill Beezley.
Because of health care privacy laws, EJFR does not provide the names of those receiving medical attention from its personnel, so the name of the pilot was not immediately known.
The man was treated on the scene before being taken to Jefferson Healthcare for further evaluation.
The plane is a 1946 Cessna 140 and had reportedly been purchased a couple of days ago by the pilot.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been contacted and will be conducting an investigation into the cause of the accident, according to Beezley.
