“Hotels, restaurants and dining cars have been ordered by Herbert Hoover to run on reduced bread rations. Not more than two ounces of bread or rolls can be served as one portion. Only in the case of corn, oatmeal or bran bread can the serving to any one person exceed this allowance.”

“The mask ball given on Friday night for the benefit of the cement walks at the school was a grand success.”

“Charles Eldridge has rented land on the east side of Chimacum Valley and it is understood will move his family there about March 1st.”

60 years ago this week (1958)

“A pair of quick change artists were reported to the city police last Thursday night after they breezed through town and left a number of business people slightly poorer and considerably wiser. The two men worked a fast shuttle with change for large bills – changing and rechanging between small purchases – and most store owners and restaurant managers later found themselves short $4 or $5 in the till.”

The national divorce rate is 2.3 per 1,000 people. In 1957, Jefferson County had a divorce rate of 4.9 per 1,000 people.

Port Townsend Chamber of Commerce members are encouraged to have all employees “do what they can to make newcomers and visitors feel welcome. The impact of a friendly greeting on new arrivals in town is important to everyone, and it can be the deciding factor when industry has a scout looking for a new location.”

30 years ago this week (1988)

Al and Marie Jakeway of Quilcene are named 1987 Jefferson County Citizens of the Year. Other nominees were John Nowak, Alice Sell and Quentin Goodrich.

“Smoking is not allowed at Jefferson General Hospital as of March 1 – and there is a move afoot to enact a smoking ban at the county courthouse.”

The Port Townsend Paper Corp. has given the Port Townsend Public Library renovation funding drive its biggest boost so far – a gift of $100,000.

The Port Townsend High School wrestling team, ranked seventh among the state’s Class A schools, wins the Nisqually League title with a 7-0 match record.

The Quilcene High girls’ basketball team defeats Chimacum 51-42 for its 14th consecutive victory. The PTHS boys beat Chimacum 60-53 behind Lamont Thornton’s 21 points. The Chimacum girls top PT 50-42 with 21 points from Janet Lewis.
