110 years ago this week (1907)

“The itemized record recently inaugurated in connection with the business of the police department, showing an average of almost one arrest a day in September; the list includes, of course, the names of women of the underworld who are not actually arrested but who go through a farce formality and pay a fine without ever having it regularly assessed against them.”

100 years ago this week (1917)

“Fish pirates are believed to be responsible for the death of a night watchman on a trap belonging to the Apex Fish Co. on the west beach of Whidbey Island, and detectives have been employed in an effort to locate the murderers, as well as to put a stop to the robbery of the trap.”

Fall salmon have taken another jump in price, with silvers being quoted at 90 cents, with lowly dog salmon bringing the fishermen 55 cents each.

A big jazz dance will take place tomorrow night at the Odd Fellows Hall for the benefit of the Soldiers’ Tobacco Fund.

90 years ago this week (1927)

“Quilcene and Poulsbo High School battled to a scoreless tie in a football game at Quilcene Saturday.”

“Townsend High football team was on the long end of a 20-6 score against Oak Harbor in the season opener last Saturday.”

60 years ago this week (1957)

“The retail trade committee of the Chamber of Commerce met Monday and decided against a business holiday on Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 11.”

Port Townsend, Quilcene and Brinnon school enrollment gains, while Chimacum drops compared to this time in 1956. Townsend enrollment totals 1,351, Chimacum 451, Quilcene 273 and Brinnon 61. 

30 years ago this week (1987)

Brinnon volunteer firefighters battle a blaze that destroys the Brinnon Restaurant. Arson is suspected.
