“Wildcats appear to be plentiful this year, county residents having applied during the past few days for bounties on eight of the predatory animals. John Huelsdonk of Spruce, in Western Jefferson, has made collection on three cats, while John Given of Clearwater also sent in three.”

60 years ago this week (1957)

“Quilcene School, which had close to normal attendance this time last week, was so hard hit by flu absence Monday that the administration decided to close school that morning. Classes are scheduled to resume today.”

“A new automotive agency, Horne Motors, will open here Friday as a Rambler dealer” at 1015 Water St., next to the Safeway store.

“The Rose Theatre, closed in recent months, will reopen Friday for weekend operations on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Manager E.E. Thompson announced.”

“Numerous youngsters, individually and in groups, received awards Thursday night in the judging of various events of the community Hallowe’en program under the general sponsorship of the Port Townsend Chamber of Commerce with assistance of several other organizations.”

30 years ago this week (1987)

The Evergreen Coho Escapee Retreat, a 158-unit recreational vehicle park, receives county environmental approval.

It was natural that Robert Altman would choose Fort Worden as the place to film “The Caine Mutiny Court Martial,” a two-hour television special set to air early next spring. Although the main action takes place in the Fort Worden gymnasium, converted into a military courtroom, the film is expected to capture the fort’s setting.

Richard Wojt, a science teacher at Chimacum High School, has completed his quest to hike all the Olympic Mountain trails in one year. He hiked nearly 1,000 linear miles and 60 vertical miles.

Port Townsend High School senior running back Rich Stapf gains 254 yards to break Rick Martin’s individual season rushing record of 1,432 yards set in 1976. Stapf, with 1,440 yards, has one game remaining.
