100 years ago (1917)

The county council of defense surveys how much food is at hand locally. The numbers include: Total quarts of canned vegetables 10,037, quarts of canned fruit 91,188, pounds of dried beans 11,623, pounds of dried peas 4,770, sacks of carrots 2,666, sacks of potatoes 12,401, boxes of apples 3,502, tons of hay 2,243, tons of oats 145; cattle over 3 years 840, cattle under 3 years 596, hogs 461, sheep 85, horses 308, chickens 10,256.

Wanted: Boy of high school age, to feed two cows and three horses during the winter; can attend high school at Chimacum and get $5 a month in addition to keep; jitney stages run right by door.

Arrangements are still under way for the housing of the men to be employed on the building of cantonments at forts Worden, Casey and Flagler.”

60 years ago this week (1957)

One boy was hospitalized overnight for injuries he received by being struck and knocked into a pool when older youths “crashed” a party at a private residence here, police reported.

By special initiative, and with all expenses paid, the Port Townsend High School Band will make its fourth annual trip to Seattle Saturday to appear n that city’s Santa Claus Parade.

“If the community is to have a swimming pool, the school district would be the logical unit of government to take it on,” The Leader publisher editorializes.

One of the largest crowds in recent years – 250 – turned out to pay special tribute to the nation’s war veterans during the annual Veterans Day ceremony Monday morning. Following the program at the American Legion Hall downtown, there was a parade on Water Street.

30 years ago this week (1987)

During the past two years Jefferson County care givers have begun to face the AIDS epidemic. Jefferson General Hospital has admitted and treated two AIDS patients.

Laborers continue to work on the Jackson Bequest sculpture project along Port Townsend’s waterfront despite a scare involving an arsenic-contaminating wood preservative that appeared in a potentially harmful state.

In order to more effectively patrol county beaches and fresh water lakes, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department is proposing, in its 1988 budget, to purchase a boat.

There was a Psychic and Crafts Fair at the Port Townsend Community Center on Saturday, sort of a spiritual smorgasbord with samples of tarot, psychometry, channeling, astrology, aura reading, even quick introductions to spiritual guides.

Port Townsend High School tailback Rich Stapf gains 236 yards in a season-ending 13-7 win against Orting, setting the football single-season rushing record at a lofty 1,677 yards.
