The schooner Okanogan arrived here yesterday from Hilo, Sandwich Islands, with a crew of only two sailors. Polly, a well-known 78-year-old local resident, is on the road to recovery after having suffered an apparent stroke several weeks ago. The bird was home alone at the residence of Sgt. and Mrs. Zimmerman when the seizure occurred. Returning home after several hours, the Zimmermans found Polly lying on his back in the cage, motionless, with leg and feet extended straight up. There were signs of breathing, however, and first aid was immediately administered. Mrs. Zimmerman, who used to raise birds, wrapped Polly up in a warm blanket, and he laid on his side for the next two days without moving. He then began to show a little improvement, and she fed him occasional bits of his favorite foods – bread and honey, banana and walnuts. Polly recovered to the point where he was able to resume a seat on his perch, but has been unable to talk. Twelve days after the stroke, he made a little noise and managed to say his name. The Zimmermans hope their jolly companion of 33 years recovers fully.
