For the second time in three months, a schooner bound from San Francisco to Alaska on a fishing and sealing cruise diverts to Port Townsend because of a mutinous crew. The first crew had complained to "have been poorly fed, housed and generally ill-treated.” The second crew, concerned their schooner was too heavily loaded, and after the second of two gales smashed two of its eight boats, decided the ship was not seaworthy to continue north.
The Leader editorializes that hotel improvements are needed. “Many a newcomer has formed an unfavorable opinion of the place through the impossibility of finding a good room on his arrival late at night, and has gone away in a severely critical mood.”
“The Secret Orders. Grips and Pass Words from Council and Lodge” is the headline on a listing of officers and activities for these Port Townsend clubs: Port Townsend Royal Arch Chapter, Sons of St. George, Masonic Lodge, Odd Fellows, Grand Army of the Republic, Knights of Pythias, Good Templars, Red Men and A.O.U.W.

The Port Townsend city attorney posts a notice of default at the city's municipal golf course and mailed it to leaseholder Steve McPherson and his Festival Management Inc. "It's for real this time," said Tim McMahan, city attorney.
