110 years ago (1907)

“By the close vote of 4 to 3, and despite the fact that attention was drawn to the depleted condition of the city treasury, the city council voted this week to expend $1,000 to put part of the Lawrence Street bridge in such repair as would preclude its being a menace to life and limb.”

90 years ago (1927)

Mayor George Banger declared tomorrow as “the beginning of the Key City’s brightest future,” when visitors from Puget Sound’s sister cities are welcomed to inaugurate the long-desired Port Townsend–Whidbey ferry route and the completion of the Olympic Highway expansion into the heart of the city.

80 years ago (1937)

Maria McIlroy is queen of the second Rhododendron Festival.

“City police issued an appeal this week for spectators to spread out during the Rhododendron Festival main parade Saturday afternoon. In past years, the spectators have been bunched so deeply along Water Street from Adams to Tyler that the small police force has had difficulty keeping the crowds off the street and under control.”

20 years ago (1997)

“For the second time in four and a half years, burglars cut through the roof of Port Townsend’s Jackpot Food Mart to steal cash and checks from the business’ safe.”

“The Port Townsend City Council was good on its word, unanimously passing an ordinance Monday evening that bans begging for money in an aggressive fashion.”

“A complaint by several transient homeless people has launched an internal investigation by Port Townsend police of one of its officers.” The transients allege that an officer unnecessarily pulled a gun on them May 12 at North Beach.

The City of Port Townsend has implemented strict new rules on construction, which critics suggest will lead to less affordable housing.

The Port Townsend High School girls’ golf team has won the Class 2A academic state championship with a cumulative grade point average of 3.75. The girls are Grace Harpole, Kasea Hamar, Marina Mackrow, El-Len Serra, Miranda Westerman and Abby Wheatley.
